LEARN MORE ABOUT NOMZAMO'S YOGA JOURNEY

When I left legal practice in 2013, yoga was the brdge between my old and new chapter. I had discovered yoga as a means of managing stress and maintaining a sense of balance. My yoga practice opened me up to the possibility of choosing a different path and kept me grounded during the transition

In 2013 I decided to committ more deeply to the practice and attended a Hatha Yoga teacher training course in India with my mother and sister.  I began my teaching journey in Cape Town where I was living at the time. I am so glad I took my sister’s advice to just teach, past the voices of fear and self doubt. I began outdoor classes in the parks around Cape Town, then the Rondebosch ashram, students at the University of Cape Town and women in feminist workshops. The diverse groups confirmed what I had always known, yoga is for every body. Yoga has the ability to meet you exactly where you are. In 2016 my sister and I fulfilled a dream and opened our own studio, The Toolbox in Durban. This is a space where we continue to explore and share the mechanics of wellbeing.

I believe that if we are to build a society that is more loving, more nurturing, kinder and fairer, we have to begin those conversations within ourselves. I do not believe you can be more loving to others than you are to yourself. Yoga is a process through which we can create the conditions of peace, joy, respect and acceptance within ourselves that can then radiate into and shape our societies. I want my students to feel safe and secure in my classes so that they can rebuild trust with their bodies and themselves and discover their beauty from the inside out.
